What a busy pirate week we have had in EYFS, making pirate spy glasses, swords and hats as well as constructing a boat to sail the seven seas on. Some of us made our own treasure maps and hid the gold in the outdoor area under the ‘x’ marks the spot. We have been busy bees creating beautiful Father’s Day cards with the loose parts and our mark making skills. As part of our Nursery adventure this week we went to Morrisons to make special sweet cones for our Daddies. A huge thank you to Gillian and the team at Morrisons for providing us with the sweets. On Wednesday afternoon Elaine from the library did her usual story session, but taught us yoga as well to link with this weeks story. After Elaine’s visit we then had a special Liturgical prayer where Robin’s read their butterfly prayers before we released our butterflies into our new community garden. Next week we will continue the pirate theme and extend to mermaids. Look out for lots of shimmer and sparkle.
Larks have had a lovely week and enjoyed their visit to Bowes museum for a workshop called Journey in Colour. The workshops are running throughout the summer. They have also enjoyed their maths outdoors learning about measure and capacity.
Wow! What a very busy, fun but colourful week we have had in the Swifts class! We started the week with a scientific enquiry about where the best environment would be to dry a wet sock. Using our knowledge of evaporation, the children predicted outside, on a washing line in direct sunlight because the sun would help to evaporate the water in the sock. We used our maths skills to create tables and line graphs and tracked the progression of our socks in their different environments to compare the rate of evaporation in each environment. I was thrilled with the children’s knowledge of evaporation and how they applied their knowledge to the investigation.
We had some lovely visitors from our neighbours in Larks on Tuesday afternoon. We created class family trees and talked about how we are feeling and how we all grow together in harmony. I was blown away with the beautiful writing and words that were drawn on their fingerprint trees. Well done everybody!
The Swifts also had a rap battle on Thursday where they created narrative poems of the Egyptian Cinderella and battled it out to win rapper of the year! Wonderful use of rhymes and rhythm was used to achieve the beating motion within their poetry performances and they all looked the part with their rap battle clothing on!
We also created Father’s Day poems using a theme of our footsteps. The Swift’s all shared what they love about their Dad’s and why they are proud to walk, hop, jump, leap and run in their Dad’s footsteps but most importantly, they shared that they love that they are growing in their Dad’s footsteps. There may be some tears when the Dads read their beautiful poems on Sunday morning. The children enjoyed painting their footprints and creating their work of art as a forever gift for their Dads. Well done Swifts, you should feel very proud of yourself for your beautiful words, pride and effort.
This week we have enjoyed learning the parable of the Good Samaritan and even created movie trailers using I-movie.
In science, we learned how to calculate the speed of moving objects and investigated ways to increase and decrease speed.
One of our transition units in Maths is the Cost of Living and we have explored the cost of buying and renting properties in Barnard Castle. We can’t believe how expensive they are and were interested to learn how mortgages will enable us to get on the property ladder.
